Bruising after lip filler: how long it lasts

Bruising is common, usually small, and typically gone inside a week to ten days. Here is the colour timeline, what makes it more likely, and the one kind of mark that is not a bruise.

Lips are one of the most richly supplied areas of the face with blood vessels, and a needle has to pass through that supply. So bruising after lip filler is not a sign that something went wrong. It is a common and expected possibility, and the main thing people want to know is how long they will be looking at it.

How likely is it

Common enough that most injectors mention it as standard, and that many people schedule appointments around social plans. It varies hugely between individuals, though, and some people bruise from nearly every appointment while others almost never do.

What tends to raise the odds:

  • Blood-thinning medication, and supplements like fish oil, high-dose vitamin E, ginkgo and ginseng. Never stop prescribed medication on your own, but do tell your injector what you take.
  • Alcohol in the 24 hours before, which widens vessels.
  • Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin taken beforehand, unless prescribed.
  • Being close to or on your period, which many people report as a higher-bruising window.
  • More product, more injection points, or a technique using a needle rather than a cannula.
  • Simple luck, in terms of where the vessels in your lip happen to run.

How to prepare for a lip filler appointment covers the things worth sorting out in the days beforehand.

The usual colour timeline

Bruises follow a fairly predictable sequence as the blood under the skin breaks down and gets reabsorbed.

WhenWhat it usually looks like
Day 0 to 1Red or pink, sometimes nothing visible yet
Day 1 to 3Darkest phase. Purple, blue or almost black
Day 3 to 6Fading toward green
Day 5 to 10Yellow or brownish, then gone
Beyond 2 weeksA bruise still clearly present is worth mentioning to your injector

Most lip bruises are small, in the order of a few millimetres at injection points, rather than large areas. Swelling runs on its own separate clock, peaking in the first 24 to 72 hours. Lip filler swelling stages covers that, and aftercare and healing timeline covers the whole arc.

What helps

Honest version: mostly time. But a few things are commonly advised.

  • Cool compress in the first day, gently, not pressed hard and not ice directly on skin. Ask your injector first, since some prefer you not to apply anything.
  • Sleep slightly elevated for the first night or two.
  • Skip the gym, alcohol, saunas and very hot showers for 24 to 48 hours. What to avoid after lip filler has the full list and the reasoning.
  • Arnica, topical or oral, is widely recommended in the aesthetics world. Evidence for it is mixed rather than strong, and some injectors recommend it while others do not bother. Ask yours.
  • Do not press, rub or massage the area to try to disperse a bruise.

Covering it

This is usually the real question, especially if there is an event.

Bruises on the lip itself are hard to conceal because lip skin does not hold product like facial skin. Bruises just outside the lip border are much easier. The approach that generally works is a colour-correcting concealer, peach or orange toned, to counter the blue, then a normal concealer and foundation over it. Setting powder helps it stay.

Wait until your injector says it is fine to apply anything to the area, usually about 24 hours, because the injection points are briefly tiny open punctures.

The more useful planning advice: if you have something important coming up, book at least two weeks before it, not two days.

When a mark is not a bruise

Ordinary bruising is a colour change that fades through the sequence above and improves day by day. A small set of signs are different in kind and are time-critical. Contact your injector immediately, or seek urgent medical care if you cannot reach them, if you see or feel:

  • Skin that turns white, pale, grey or dusky, or develops a blotchy, net-like or mottled pattern
  • Pain that is increasing rather than easing, or that seems out of proportion
  • An area that feels cold compared with the tissue around it
  • Any change in vision, or pain around the eye
  • Spreading redness, heat, fever or discharge

These are rare, and they are the reason to know who treated you and have a number for them. Do not wait overnight to see, and do not use this page or any other to decide whether what you are seeing counts. Nothing here can assess your lips.

The part worth settling earlier

Bruising fades. What tends to linger is the question of whether the result itself was right, which is harder to resolve once the product is in.

Previewing a fuller shape on your own selfie, and agreeing it with your injector before anything is placed, deals with that in advance. Then the first week is only about healing, not about wondering.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

How long does bruising last after lip filler?

Most lip bruises are small and fade over roughly five to ten days, moving from red to purple, then green, then yellow before clearing. A bruise still clearly visible after two weeks is worth mentioning to your injector.

How can I avoid bruising from lip filler?

Commonly advised: avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers unless prescribed, and tell your injector about any blood-thinning medication or supplements such as fish oil or high-dose vitamin E. Never stop prescribed medication on your own. Some bruising still comes down to where your vessels happen to run.

Can I wear makeup over a lip filler bruise?

Usually after about 24 hours, once your injector confirms it is fine to apply anything to the area. A peach or orange colour-correcting concealer under normal concealer is the usual approach. Bruises just outside the lip border cover far more easily than bruises on the lip itself.

REALISTIC

Stop wondering. See it for yourself.

Most lip filler decisions start with a guess and a reference photo of someone else. Start with your own face instead.

Planning

How often do you need lip filler topped up?

The honest answer is less often than most people assume, and the reason is that filler does not vanish on its expiry date. Here is the realistic schedule and the yearly cost.
